Site historique de l'Île-des-Moulins

Open from June 25 to August 29, from Wednesday to Sunday and by reservation the rest of the year

Back to the Beginnings

From 1673 to nowadays, many things happened on the Île-des-Moulins. From a simple island hosting an estate with no name, it has become the central point of the Terrebonne seigniory. The potential of the island, which is located in the middle of a vigorous river, was so great that it was designated as the perfect place where to build mills. Throughout the years, the estate flourished with the help of several owners. Unfortunately, it lost its allure towards the end of the seigniorial regime around 1854 until the end of the 1960s. In 1973, the island was finally made a national historic site.

In 1976, a large restoration site was put in place. It lasted to 1995 and was the 2nd most important in the province after that of Place Royale in Québec City. Now opened to the public, the site invites people to walk here and there and admire the typical architecture of the New France epoch. Several epoch reconstitutions have the place of honour, from the Carnaval des moulins de Terrebonne to the Fête des Voyageurs.
