Berthierville also has its islands: the Berthier Islands. Along with the Sorel islands on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, they form the lac Saint-Pierre archipelago. In 2000, UNESCO made lac Saint-Pierre a biosphere reserve. Nothing to be surprised about when we know thay 90% of the territory is still wild and serves as a migratory staging area for several birds.
In fact, about 288 species live on the islands. Some stay here year-long, while others just pass by. Its 103 islands make it the most important archipelago of the St. Lawrence River. It is also the main heron nest in North America, since there more than 1,300 nests have been ecorded in the reserve. Scientists have also studied 27 species of rare plants in the area. This territory can be visited by bike or by foot.
