Moulin Grenier was built in 1820 by François Grenier, but has been owned for a long time by the Lebeau family. The city of Repentigny is now the owner of this mill which has been listed as a historic monument since 1976. The excellent condition of the original mechanism represents one of the mill’s most interesting features. The mill is said to have been productive up to the 1880s but was on the verge of being abandoned in the 70s when it was hit by a car.
The city of Repentigny became the owner at the start of the 2000s and undertook restoration works. Works have therefore been executed in three steps: first, the roofing, then in 2004 and 2005, the fenestration, flanges, the mechanism and the stones. Then, in September 2005, the finalization of the works and the mill’s development program including its lighting.
During the restoration, the mill still had most of its original parts. For these reasons, the city has decided not to conceal the replaced components. They are noticeable and have been in no way designed to imitate the original ones. When it was possible, we have kept all the good sections of a room which had to be replaced. You can find 75% of the mill’s new components on the ground floor. On the other floors, almost all the furniture is genuine.
We would only have to unfurl the sails and release the brake in order to make the mill turn. To make flour however, there would be many adjustments to make, but the mill is in working order. Nevertheless, its location (too close to Rue Notre-Dame and the electric wires) and the fact that the prevailing winds are blocked by houses and trees, make its use impossible.
