Les Îles de Berthier

The Berthier Islands

Located pposite Berthierville, the Berthier Islands make, along with the islands of Sorel, the Lac Saint-Pierre archipelago. These 103 islands and lakes were officially named “Lac saint-Pierre Biosphere World Reserve” by UNESCO. There are only six of these reserves in Canada, including two in Québec, the second being located in Charlevoix. Ninety percent of this territory is natural and it represents 50% of the St. Lawrence wetlands. In this reserve, you will find 27 species of rare plants, 79 fish species and 288 bird species. The Berthier Islands are also the most important migratory halt for wildfowls and the most important heron nesting place in North America. It is possible to tour the channels, the marshes and the aquatic grass by boat, foot or bike. Take the ferryboat to reach Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, one of the two municipalities of the Islands. There, you will find a cycling path, and can go to the Sainte-Pierre Outfitter.
